Mirror, Mirror

An exhibition of new ceramics by Anna Barlow and film by Joe Morgan

An anxious and uncomfortable display of strained relationships and absurd traditions are immortalised in gloriously beautiful sculpture and cinema.

A fusion of sculpture, art installation and cinema, Mirror Mirror is an exciting new collaboration between ceramic artist Anna Barlow and film director Joe Morgan where gloriously beautiful sculpture and cinema are used to discuss anxious and uncomfortable displays of strained relationships and absurd traditions.

“This work displays the idea of where there is light, there is shade. Where there is a high, a low will follow. A sugar low follows a sugar high… Overindulgence is great in the moment, often leading to shame and self-loathing when confronted by our reflection over time.“ (Joe Morgan).

Both artists share a fascination with the at times ridiculous forms of etiquette, and the cyclical endurance of family dynamics shrouded in the politeness of English protocol.

Grotesque, yet full of beauty, the coming together of Morgan’s film and Barlow’s sculptures presents a razor-sharp and immersive experience that explores the heightened moments of celebration, with the constant threat of tension and strained relationships.

The exhibition, which seamlessly displays the work of both Barlow and Morgan, gives us an inflated and hyperreal critique of English society and self-reflection in the 21st century.

Threaded with humour throughout and framed in the meticulous artistic style of Morgan’s film direction, the director comments on the new film work produced specifically for this collaboration with Anna Barlow:

“Our characters inhabit a restricted, uptight and censored world, but there are these intense anxieties and tensions, this turbulence below the surface. As a companion piece to Anna’s sculptures, I wanted to create something that felt immediate and spikey, beautiful and horrifying, a battle cry against our homogenised world. I wanted to see what would happen if you fused The Great British Bake Off with Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist …. I think we get a little taste of that in the film…”
