Title
The First Hag
Year
2018
Description
This is one of a series of drawings made either for the limited, letterpress edition of Ness, or for the subsequent Penguin edition, or simply as an exploration of the nature of the hagstone.
A hagstone is a pebble, usually of flint, with a hole all the way through it. They were once used as magical talismen, to bring luck or to ward off the evil eye, and were much praised by fishermen who would hang them from their boats.
The hagstone is a totemic force within the pages of Ness, Stanley Donwood’s latest book.
